The thieves usually take the stolen vehicle to a neighboring district or a State and approach an agent in nearest Regional Transport Authority (RTO) office for re-registration. Almost all stolen vehicles are re-registered under a new Registration Certificate (RC) and given a new number. But while it is possible for the thieves to get a new RC for the vehicle, they unable to change the engine and chassis number of the vehicle.
Therefore, RTO/ARTO, while re-registering the stolen vehicle can visit our Website and find out whether the vehicle is clean or tainted/ stolen. Also any ignorant person/dealers buying/selling such vehicle can check from our Website about the status of such vehicle.
All vehicles, for maintenance and service, are taken to service centers. At these centers, a job card is created and this card carries details like engine number, chassis number etc. If the stolen vehicle database is linked to the workshop database, it can easily track a stolen vehicle. The moment a Vehicle registered with us is taken to a workshop for service and a job card created, it can be identified being a Stolen Vehicle.
We are giving a fairly large number of telephone numbers of the Police Station on Website. These pertain to the State of Jammu and Kashmir. In fact, large number of vehicles stolen from Delhi, Haryana, parts of UP and Punjab end up in remote areas of J&K. The converse is also true as vehicles stolen from J&K are taken to Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and U.P. are re-registered there.
In this manner, a stolen vehicle can be tracked at the RTO/ARTO office, at the service station or by the Police at its checkpoints/nakas and recovered.
